2014-2015 Enrollment Begins
Beginning March 1st, The Burnham Wood Family of High Performing Schools is opening enrollment for the 2014-2015 School Year to all residents of El Paso County. The schools, Da Vinci School for Science & the Arts, Howard Burnham Elementary School, and Vista del Futuro Elementary School, will be hosting Open Houses throughout the month of March. Next year, the Vista del Futuro Elementary School will add a sixth grade. According to Superintendent, Iris Burnham, many parents have expressed an interest in their children attending a small, high performing 6th grade rather than sending them to a large, overwhelming middle school. All applicants will be selected by Lottery on April 1st.
It’s Sweet Sixteen for the El Paso Education Initiative, Inc.
Having completed our Quincenera year (2012-2013) our schools have met the challenges laid before them with success. All of our campuses have met AYP (Average Yearly Progress). Vista del Futuro, our relatively new elementary campus on the Eastside of El Paso, received distinctions in Reading, Math and Progress. On the new and unfamiliar state assessments (STAAR) all schools demonstrated high performance in the reading and math areas. Of particular note are the exceptionally high passing rates on the various End of Course tests our Da Vinci students earned. We must also mention that 100% of our eleventh graders taking the TAKS Exit tests passed all Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies components.
While we do not want to teach to a test, we recognize the reality of being judged by how well our students perform on these new instruments. Our strategy has been to conduct several benchmark tests throughout the year, so we can track each student’s progress and monitor those who need more assistance. Working with testing data has refined teachers’ instruction and prevented students from falling through the cracks. With the support of our parents and the cooperation and the acceptance by our students, we came out on top!
Nevertheless, our teachers have not turned away from the enrichment activities, as well as the project based learning activities that make school so much fun. In addition, we have added a number of clubs and opportunities for students to be creative and excel in areas such as Lego robotics, Suzuki violin, Latin, Piano, Student Council, and much more. Along with these new activities are competitions that have brought our teams awards and recognition. Consequently we have had invitations to travel to regional and state level contests, particularly in robotics and engineering. Unfortunately these opportunities require extensive fundraising that often place a burden on our families’ budgets and the students’ time. For these reasons, we must reach out to the greater community and tell them about the wonderful opportunities our charter schools are offering El Paso children free of charge. We need them to partner up with our campuses in order to lend the extra support that helps us shine and compete.
As we enter our sixteenth year, we hope to light those celebratory candles so that our community will be drawn to the accomplishments of this small, nonprofit organization, and will join us as Advisory Board members and generous donors to the many worthwhile projects we hope to execute. For example our new robot is waiting for a name and a sponsor. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to put the name for an El Paso business/donor on our student designed robot that is destined, as they have in the past, to travel to the Dallas Regionals and play its little wires out in some soon to be revealed competition?
What about our talented and enthusiastic performers who desire nothing more than to find venues where they might display their music, dance and art? Then there are our Da Vinci high school students looking for community internships that will spark their career interests and hopefully keep them in El Paso after they complete their education. How many businesses are out there that will see the light of those sixteen candles and open their hearts to them? We are hopeful and excited for the outcomes.
